Presentlyweleftmyroadforthedeepshadeofanarrowcountrywaywherethegreatoaksandbeechesmeetoverheadandnohedge-
clippersetshishandtostaynature'sprofusion;andsobypleasantlanesscarcethewaggon'swidthacross,nowshady,nowsunny,hereborderedbythicksetcoverts,theregivingonfruitfulfields,wecameatlengthtothemill。

Maybehedid,andgoingforthfrombeforetheavengingswordofhisownforgingtothebitternessofanaccursedearth,tookwithhimthisbrightmemoryofperfect,ceaselessservice,andsofashionedourlabouringwheel-patheticlinkwiththetimeofhisinnocency。
Itisoneofmanyunansweredquestions,goodtoaskbecauseithasnoanswer,onlythesuggestionofatrainofthought:perhapsweareneversoreceptiveaswhenwithfoldedhandswesaysimply,"Thisisagreatmystery。"IwatchedandwondereduntilJemcalled,andIhadtoleavetheripplingweirandthewater'sside,andthewheelwithitsuntoldsecret。
Themiller'swifegavemeteaandacrustofhome-madebread,andthemiller'slittlemaidsatonmykneewhileItoldthesadtaleofalittlepinkcloudseparatedfromitsparentsandteazedandhuntedbymischievouslittleairs。To-morrow,ifImistakenot,hergardenwillbewetwithitstears,and,letushope,pointamoral;forthetalehaditsorigininafrenziedchickendrivenfromthesideofananxiousmother,andpursuedbyasturdy,relentlessfigureinawhitesun-bonnet。
