  ThesevisionsandeventsIcanrecallvaguely;andwiththemmyremembrancesoftheballcometoaclose。Itwasacompletefailure,andthatwould,ofitself,havebeenenoughtosickenmeofremainingattheDuskydaleInstitution,evenifIhadnothadanyreasonsofthetendersortforwishingtoextendmytravelsinruralEnglandtotheneighborhoodofBarkingham。

  Fortunately,theManagingCommitteerelievedmeofanyperplexityonthishead,bypassingaresolution,oneday,whichcalleduponthePresidenttoremonstratewithmeonmywantofproperinterestintheaffairsoftheInstitution。IrepliedtotheremonstrancethattheaffairsoftheInstitutionweresohopelesslydullthatitwasequallyabsurdandunjusttoexpectanyhumanbeingtotakethesmallestinterestinthem。Atthistherearoseanindignantcryof"Resign!"fromthewholecommittee;towhichIansweredpolitely,thatIshouldbedelightedtoobligethegentlemen,andtogoforthwith,onconditionofreceivingaquarter'ssalaryinthewayofpreviouscompensation。
  Afterasordidoppositionfromaneconomicalminority,myconditionofdeparturewasaccepted。Iwrotealetterofresignation,receivedinexchangetwelvepoundstenshillings,andtookmyplace,thatsameday,onthebox-seatoftheBarkinghammail。
