  Thesethingsagainalmostviolentlymovedme,andifI,afteraninstant,inmysilence,turnedaway,itwasnotonlytokeepherwaiting,buttomakemyelationmoreprivate。IturnedawaytothattunethatIliterally,forafewminutes,quittedher,availingmyselfthus,superficially,oftheairofweighingaconsequence。Iwanderedofftwentystepsand,whileIpassedmyhandovermytroubledhead,lookedvaguelyatobjectsontablesandsniffedabsentlyatflowersinbowls。Idon’tknowhowlongIsolostmyself,norquitewhy——asImustforsometimehavekeptitup——mycompaniondidn’tnowreallyembraceherpossiblealternativeofruptureandretreat。

  Icouldhavemadethemuneasy,ofcourse,onlybymakingthemfearmyintervention;
  andyettheideaoftheirbeinguneasywaslesswonderfulthantheideaofmyhaving,withallmyprecautions,communicatedtothemaconsciousness。
  ThiswassothelastthingIhadwantedtodothatIfelt,duringmyswiftexcursion,howmuchtimeIshouldneedinthefutureforrecoveryoftheprocess——allofthefinestwind—blownintimations,wovenofsilenceandsecrecyandair——bywhichtheirsuspicionwouldhavethrobbedintolife。
