  "Well,Ithoughtitwaspossible。WhentheycameoutthroughtheFrenchwindowtherewasthepond,withonetemptinglittleholeintheice,rightinfrontoftheirnoses。Couldtherebeabetterhiding—place?"

  Hewasaverytallyoungman,golden—moustached,blue—eyed,withaskinwhichhadbeenburnedbytropicalsuns,andaspringystepwhichshowedthatthehugeframewasasactiveasitwasstrong。Heclosedthedoorbehindhim,andthenhestoodwithclenchedhandsandheavingbreast,chokingdownsomeovermasteringemotion。
