  ShedrovefromMissPainter’stoherownapartment。Themaid—servantwhohaditinchargehadbeenapprisedofhercoming,andhadopenedoneortwooftherooms,andpreparedafireinherbedroom。Annashutherselfin,refusingthewoman’sministrations。Shefeltcoldandfaint,andaftershehadtakenoffherhatandcloakshekneltdownbythefireandstretchedherhandstoit。
  Inonerespect,atleast,itwascleartoherthatshewoulddowelltofollowSophyViner’scounsel。IthadbeenanactoffollytofollowOwen,andherfirstbusinesswastogetbacktoGivrebeforehim。Buttheonlytrainleavingthateveningwasaslowone,whichdidnotreachFrancheuiltillmidnight,andsheknewthathertakingitwouldexciteMadamedeChantelle’swonderandleadtointerminabletalk。

  room。Theroomwascoldandfireless,andahardglarefellfromthewall—lightsontheshroudedfurnitureandthewhiteslipscoveringthecurtains。Helookedpaleandstern,withafrownoffatiguebetweenhiseyes;andsherememberedthatinthreedayshehadtravelledfromGivretoLondonandback。Itseemedincrediblethatallthathadbefallenhershouldhavebeencompressedwithinthespaceofthreedays!
