  THESECRETWATERSOFTHERIVERMOUSE
  TothisquestiontheProphetcouldoffernoanswerotherthanabodilyone。HesilentlypresentedhimselftothegazeofMalkiel,instinctivelysquaringhisshoulders,openingouthischest,andexpandinghisnostrilsinanefforttofillaslargeaspaceintheatmosphereoftheparlouraspossible。AndMalkielcontinuedtoregardhimwiththestaringeyesofonewhosemindisseethingwithstrange,upheavingthoughtsandalarmingapprehensions。MutelytheProphetswelledandmutelyMalkielobservedhimswell,tillapointwasreachedfromwhichfurtherprogress——atleastontheProphet’spart——wasimpossible。TheProphetwasnowasbigasthestructureofhisframepermittedhimtobe,andapparentlyMalkielrealisedthefact,forhesuddenlydroppedhiseyesandexclaimed,——
