Theancientmanners,thehabitsandcustomsoftheaboriginalracebywhomtheHighlandsofScotlandwereinhabited,hadalwaysappearedtomepeculiarlyadaptedtopoetry。Thechangeintheirmanners,too,hadtakenplacealmostwithinmyowntime,oratleastIhadlearnedmanyparticularsconcerningtheancientstateoftheHighlandsfromtheoldmenofthelastgeneration。IhadalwaysthoughttheoldScottishGaelhighlyadaptedforpoeticalcomposition。Thefeudsandpoliticaldissensionswhich,halfacenturyearlier,wouldhaverenderedthericherandwealthierpartofthekingdomindisposedtocountenanceapoem,thesceneofwhichwaslaidintheHighlands,werenowsunkinthegenerouscompassionwhichtheEnglish,morethananyothernation,feelforthemisfortunesofanhonourablefoe。ThePoemsofOssianhadbytheirpopularitysufficientlyshownthat,ifwritingsonHighlandsubjectswerequalifiedtointerestthereader,merenationalprejudiceswere,inthepresentday,veryunlikelytointerferewiththeirsuccess。
