  ItmayhavebeentheDevilwhoarrangedthething,butthefactofthecaseisthatLossonhadforalongtimebeenworryingSimmonsinanaimlessway。Itgavehimoccupation。Thetwohadtheircotssidebyside,andwouldsometimesspendalongafternoonswearingateachother;butSimmonswasafraidofLossonanddarednotchallengehimtoafight。Hethoughtoverthewordsinthehotstillnights,andhalfthehatehefelttowardLossonbeventedonthewretchedpunkahcoolie。

  Intherestlessnights,afterhehadbeenasleepallday,fitsofblindragecameuponSimmonrandheldhimtillhetrembledallover,whilehethoughtinhowmanydifferentwayshewouldslayLosson。Sometimeshewouldpicturehimselftramplingthelifeoutoftheman,withheavyammunition-boots,andatotherssmashinginhisfacewiththebutt,andatothersjumpingonhisshouldersanddraggingtheheadbacktilltheneckbonecracked。
  Thenhismouthwouldfeelhotandfevered,andhewouldreachoutforanothersupofthebeerinthepannikin。
