  PREFACE
  Underthishead,Idesiretosayafewwordsuponthreesubjects,——myfriends,mybook,andmyself。
  Myfriends,thoughnotlegioninnumber,havebeen,intheireffortsinmybehalf,disinterested,sincere,andenergetic。
  Mybook:Ilayit,asmyfirstoffering,attheshrineofmycountry’sfame。"Woulditwereworthier。"Whileoursoldiersarefirstineveryfieldwheretheymeetourenemies,andwhilethewisdomofourlegislatorsisjustifiedbeforealltheworld,intheperfectionofourbelovedinstitutions,ourliteraturelanguishes。Thisshouldnotbeso;forliterature,withitskindredarts,makesthetruegloryofanation。WebowinspiritwhenGreeceisnamed,notalonebecauseshewasthemotherofheroesandlawgivers,butbecauseherhandrockedthecradleofaliteratureasenduringasitisbeautifulandbrilliant,andcherishedintheirinfancythoseartswhicheventuallyrepaidhernursingcareinarichharvestofimmortalrenown。
