Therewasquiteanovationinthecitywhileheremainedthere。
ButothercallsawaitedJasmin。Hereceiveddeputationsfrommanyofthetownsinthedepartmentsolicitinghisappearance,andtherecitationofhispoems。Hehadtoportionouthistimewithcare,andtoarrangetheprogrammeofhisvisits。Whenthetwopilgrimsstartedontheirjourney,theywerefrequentlyinterruptedbycrowdsofpeople,whowouldnotallowJasmintopasswithoutrecitingsomeofhispoetry。JasminandMassontravelledbythepost-officecar——thecheapestofallconveyances——butatMontignactheywerestoppedbyacrowdofpeople,andJasminhadtoundergothesameprocess。Freeandhearty,hewasalwayswillingtocomplywiththeirrequests。

ThepurseoftheAbbewasnowsufficientlywellfilledtoenablehimtoproceedwiththerebuildingofthechurchofVergt;andtheworkwassowelladvanced,thatbythe23rdofthefollowingmonthofJulyitwasreadyforconsecration。Asolemnceremonythentookplace。Sixbishops,includinganarchbishop,andthreehundredpriestswerepresent,withmorethanfifteenthousandpeopleofallranksandconditionsoflife。Neverhadsuchaceremonybeenseenbefore——atleastinsosmallatown。

Thelocalenthusiasmwasnot,however,withoutitsdrawbacks。
