  WhilethesemeasuresweretakinginbehalfofCedricandhiscompanions,thearmedmenbywhomthelatterhadbeenseized,hurriedtheircaptivesalongtowardstheplaceofsecurity,wheretheyintendedtoimprisonthem。Butdarknesscameonfast,andthepathsofthewoodseemedbutimperfectlyknowntothemarauders。Theywerecompelledtomakeseverallonghalts,andonceortwicetoreturnontheirroadtoresumethedirectionwhichtheywishedtopursue。Thesummermornhaddawneduponthemeretheycouldtravelinfullassurancethattheyheldtherightpath。Butconfidencereturnedwithlight,andthecavalcadenowmovedrapidlyforward。Meanwhile,thefollowingdialoguetookplacebetweenthetwoleadersofthebanditti。

  CedricnosoonersawtheturretsofFront-de-Buf’scastleraisetheirgreyandmoss-grownbattlements,glimmeringinthemorningsunabovethewoodbywhichtheyweresurrounded,thanheinstantlyauguredmoretrulyconcerningthecauseofhismisfortune。

  Theattendantsremainedasmutetothisaddressastotheformer,andtheynowstoodbeforethegateofthecastle。DeBracywindedhishornthreetimes,andthearchersandcross-bowmen,whohadmannedthewalluponseeingtheirapproach,hastenedtolowerthedrawbridge,andadmitthem。
