  AstheearsofIsaacreceivedthehopesofescapewhichthisspeechintimated,hebegangradually,andinchbyinch,asitwere,toraisehimselfupfromtheground,untilhefairlyresteduponhisknees,throwingbackhislonggreyhairandbeard,andfixinghiskeenblackeyesuponthePalmer’sface,withalookexpressiveatonceofhopeandfear,notunmingledwithsuspicion。Butwhenheheardtheconcludingpartofthesentence,hisoriginalterrorappearedtoreviveinfullforce,andhedroptoncemoreonhisface,exclaiming,``_I_possessthemeansofsecuringgood-will!alas!thereisbutoneroadtothefavourofaChristian,andhowcanthepoorJewfindit,whomextortionshavealreadyreducedtothemiseryofLazarus?’’
