　　AbouSaood，whohadreceivedpermissiontogotoKhartoum，hadonlygonedowntheriverasfarashisstationattheBohr。TherehehadmadearrangementswithhispeoplethattheivoryfromLatookastation，100
　　mileseastofGondokoro，shouldavoidmyhead-quarters，andbeconveyedbyanobliquecoursetotheBohr。Bythisswindle，thegovernmentwouldbecheatedoutoftheshareoftwo-fifthsoftheivorywhichbelongedtothembycontractwithAgad&Co。
　　AbouSaoodhavingpersonallywitnessedthedepartureofthetroopstoKhartoum，consideredhisgameaswon，andthattheexpedition，nowreducedtoonly502officersandmen，wouldbecompelledtocentralizeatGondokoro，withoutthepossibilityofpenetratingtheinterior。Hehadthusstartedforhisstationsinthedistantsouth，whereheintendedtoincitethenativesagainstthegovernment，topreventmefromfollowingoutmyplanswiththesmallforceatmydisposal。
