Nearlyeverynightweweresubjecttoattemptsatsurprise。Thiswasexcellentpracticeforthetroops,asittaughtthemthe,necessityofkeepingagoodlook-out;atthesametimeitwasverywearying,asthemenhadtoworkhardallday,andtheywerekeptawakeatnight。
TheBariswereirrepressibleverminthatgaveusnorest。Mymenwerealloccupiedinbuildingthestation,thereforeitwasimpossibleformetotakeaflyingcolumnandgivetheBarisaseverelesson;butImadeupmymindthatwhentheworkshouldbefinished,Iwouldtakethefightoutofthemmostthoroughly。Theynowconsideredusfairgame,thattheymightinsultastheythoughtproper;andIheardfromourtwofaithfulallies,SherroomandMorgian,thattheyimaginedweshouldbecomeafraidofthem,andthenreturntoKhartoum。

Theattackingforcenowadvancesinperfectsilence,andapproachinguponhandsandkneesinthesamemannerasthescouts,theysuddenlyspringuponthesentries,andwithwildyellsmakeageneralrushuponthecamp。Thissuddenattackwouldbeextremelydangerousunlessprovidedagainst;andinthismannerlargepartiesoftheslave-huntershavebeencompletelydestroyed。
