  TheBariswereexceedinglyneatintheirdwellings,andtheirvillageswereinnumerable。Eachhutwassurroundedbyasmallcourtcomposedofcementmadefromtheclayofthewhite-anthillsmixedwithcow-dungandsmearedwithashes:thesecourtswerealwayskeptscrupulouslyclean。
  TheBarihutdiffersfromthatofothertribes,asitcontainsaninnercircle,whichcanonlybeusedbycreepingonthehandsandknees-firstthroughtheentrance,whichisonlytwenty-fourincheshigh,andsecondlyfromthepassageformedbytheinnercircle。Theinnerwallsareformedofwattlesandclayneatlysmearedorplasteredwithcement。
  Theyarequicklyattackedbythewhiteants,whichdestroythewattles,buttheclayissufficientlytenacioustoformawallwhenthewoodorreedsmayhavedisappeared。

  TheBarisareagreatpastoralpeople,andpossessimmenseherdsofcattle。Thesearegenerallysmallactiveanimalswithhumps;whiteistheprevailingcolour。Thesheeparesmallandthemuttonisgood;butalthoughthefinepasturageoftheBaricountryiseminentlyadaptedforsheepandgoats,theseanimalsaredelicate,andrequiremuchattentionduringtheheavyrains,atwhichtimetheyarealwayskeptbeneatharoofatnight,withfirescomposedofdrycow-dungtocreateasmokethatwilldriveawayfliesormosquitoes。
