Iftheworstcametotheworst,andtheboycametoharm,thepaperwouldincriminatenobody。AndhewouldgouptoUmballaleisurelyand-atacertainriskofexcitingfreshsuspicion-repeathistalebywordofmouthtothepeopleconcerned。

Thehorse-trader,curiouslyenough,hadlefthisdoorunlocked,andhismenwerebusycelebratingtheirreturntoIndiawithawholesheepofMahbub’sbounty。AsleekyounggentlemanfromDelhi,armedwithabunchofkeyswhichtheFlowerhadunshackledfromthesenselessone’sbelt,wentthrougheverysinglebox,bundle,mat,andsaddle-baginMahbub’spossessionevenmoresystematicallythantheFlowerandthepunditweresearchingtheowner。
