  Thedayarrived,anditwasmarvellouslyfine——oneofthosedaysinAugustwhenheatpossessestheworldandholdsittrancedandstill,buthasintheverystrengthofitspossessionsomescentofthedecayandchillofautumnthatistofollowsocloseuponitsheels。
  Therewasnobreeze,nowindfromthesea,onlyaskyutterlywithoutcloudandaworldwithoutsound。
  PunctuallyatelevenofthemorningthesplendidLePageequipagearrivedatCowFarm。Splendiditwas!Alargewagonette,withastoutsuperciliousfellowontheboxwhosniffedatthehealthyodoursofthefarmandstaredhaughtilyatMrs。Monkasthoughsheshouldbeashamedtobealive。TheColeshadprovidedasmallplump“jingle“withasmallplumppony,theirregularconveyance;theponywasBob,andhewouldnotgouphillsunlesspersuadedwithsugar,butJeremylovedhimandwouldnothaveriddenbehindanyothersteedinthewholeworld。HowcontemptuouslythebigblackhorsesofthewagonettegazeddowntheirnostrilsatBob,andhowsuperblyMrs。LePage,sittingveryuprightunderherwhitesunshade,greetedMrs。Cole!
