  Thepoemis,ofakind,anepic:theepicofabravesoulstrivingagainstbafflingcircumstance。Itisfullofpassagesofraretechnicalexcellence,aswellasofconceptivebeauty:

  Intheselines,particularlyintheirclose,ismanifesttheinfluenceofthenobleHebraicpoetry。ItmusthavebeenatthisperiodthatBrowningconnedoverandoverwithanexultantdelightthesimplebutlordlydictionofIsaiahandtheotherprophets,preferringthisBiblicalpoetrytothatevenofhisbelovedGreeks。
  ThereisananecdoteofhiswalkingacrossapublicparkIamtoldRichmond,butmoreprobablyitwasWimbledonCommon
  withhishatinhislefthandandhisrightwavingtoandfrodeclamatorily,whilethewindblewhishairaroundhisheadlikeanimbus:
  soraptinhisecstasyoverthesolemnsweepoftheBiblicalmusicthathedidnotobserveasmallfollowingconsistingofseveraleagerchildren,expectantofthrillingstump-oratory。Hewasjusttheman,however,toacceptananti-climaxgenially,andtodismisshisdisappointedauditorywithsomethingmoretangiblethananaddress。

  Asforthemuchmisused`Shakespearian’comparison,sooftenmistakenlyappliedtoBrowning,thereisnothingin“Paracelsus“
  intheleastwayderivative。BecauseShakespeareisthegreatestgeniusevolvedfromourrace,itdoesnotfollowthateveryloftyintellect,everygreatobjectivepoet,shouldbelabelled“Shakespearian“。
  Butthereisacertainqualityinpoeticexpressionwhichwesospecify,becausetheintensehumanitythrobbinginitfindshighestutteranceinthegreatestofourpoets:andthereisatleastoneinstanceofsuchpoignantspeechin“Paracelsus“,worthyalmosttoberankedwiththelastdespairingcryofGuidocallinguponmurderedPompilia:
