  LadyJanebegantoperceive,whatthelawyerhaddiscoveredsomeminutespreviously——thattherewassomethingwronginthevillaatHampstead。Theladyofthehousewasaladyinananomalouspositionofsomekind。Andasthehouse,toallappearance,belongedtoMr。Vanborough’sfriend,Mr。Vanborough’sfriendmustinspiteofhisrecentdisclaimerbeinsomewayresponsibleforit。Arriving,naturallyenough,atthiserroneousconclusion,LadyJane’seyesrestedforaninstantonMrs。Vanboroughwithafinelycontemptuousexpressionofinquirywhichwouldhaverousedthespiritofthetamestwomaninexistence。Theimpliedinsultstungthewife’ssensitivenaturetothequick。Sheturnedoncemoretoherhusband——thistimewithoutflinching。
