  Shewasnottoblame;itwasclearlyimpossibleforhertohaveforeseensuchaneventasGeoffrey’sdepartureforLondon。Still,shefeltanuneasysenseofresponsibility——avaguedreadofwhatmighthappennext。Shesatnervouslytwistingherhandkerchiefinherlap,andmadenoanswer。

  Arnoldwasdelightedtohearit。Hehadbeenmerelyunwillingtoleaveherthusfar。Hewasabsolutelydeterminedtostaywithhernow。

  Itwascruel——underothercircumstancesitwouldhavebeenimpossible——todisappointhim。ButthevaguefearofconsequenceswhichhadtakenpossessionofAnnewasnottobetrifledwith。
