AfterwardsGodfreyfounditthrownintothewood-housetobechoppedupforfirewood,thoughluckilybeforethishappened。
Bythistimeakindofangerhadseizedhim。Itwastruethathehadnotsaidbywhattrainhewascoming,forthereasonthatuntilhereachedLondonhecouldnottell,buthehadwrittenthathewastoarrivethatafternoon,andsurelysomenotemighthavebeentakenofthefact。
Hewentdownstairsandconfrontedhisfather,whoaloneamidsomuchchangeseemedtobeexactlythesame。Mr。Knightshookhimbythehandwithoutanyparticularcordiality,andatonceattackedhimfornothavingintimatedthehourofhisarrival,sayingthatitwastoolatetoadvisethecarriertocallatthestationforhisbaggageandthatatrapwouldhavetobesent,whichcostmoney。
