AsshespokeeveryonestaredatNat,andthenwhiskedintotheirseats,tryingtobeorderlyandfailingutterly。TheBhaersdidtheirbesttohavetheladsbehavewellatmealtimes,andgenerallysucceededprettywell,fortheirruleswerefewandsensible,andtheboys,knowingthattheytriedtomakethingseasyandhappy,didtheirbesttoobey。Buttherearetimeswhenhungryboyscannotberepressedwithoutrealcruelty,andSaturdayevening,afterahalf-holiday,wasoneofthosetimes。

Natfoundhimselfverywelloffbehindthetallpitchers,withTommyBangsjustaroundthecorner,andMrs。Bhaerclosebytofillupplateandmugasfastashecouldemptythem。
“Whoisthatboynextthegirldownattheotherend?“whisperedNattohisyoungneighborundercoverofagenerallaugh。
