WhenIconversewiththefreestofmyneighbors,Iperceivethat,whatevertheymaysayaboutthemagnitudeandseriousnessofthequestion,andtheirregardforthepublictranquillity,thelongandtheshortofthematteris,thattheycannotsparetheprotectionoftheexistinggovernment,andtheydreadtheconsequencestotheirpropertyandfamiliesofdisobediencetoit。
Formyownpart,IshouldnotliketothinkthatIeverrelyontheprotectionoftheState。But,ifIdenytheauthorityoftheStatewhenitpresentsitstax-bill,itwillsoontakeandwasteallmyproperty,andsoharassmeandmychildrenwithoutend。Thisishard。Thismakesitimpossibleforamantolivehonestly,andatthesametimecomfortablyinoutwardrespects。Itwillnotbeworththewhiletoaccumulateproperty;thatwouldbesuretogoagain。
Youmusthireorsquatsomewhere,andraisebutasmallcrop,andeatthatsoon。Youmustlivewithinyourself,anddependuponyourselfalwaystuckedupandreadyforastart,andnothavemanyaffairs。AmanmaygrowrichinTurkeyeven,ifhewillbeinallrespectsagoodsubjectoftheTurkishgovernment。Confuciussaid,“Ifastateisgovernedbytheprinciplesofreason,povertyandmiseryaresubjectsofshame;ifastateisnotgovernedbytheprinciplesofreason,richesandhonorsarethesubjectsofshame。“
