  Thesightthatnowgreeteduswasonethatwilleverbevividlyimpresseduponmymind。Fivefoamingstreams,rushingthroughasmanygorges,andswelledandturbidbytherecentrains,unitedtogetherinonemadplungeofnearlyeightyfeet,andfellwithwilduproarintoadeepblackpoolscoopedoutofthegloomy-lookingrocksthatlaypiledaround,andthenceinonecollectedbodydasheddownanarrowslopingchannelwhichseemedtopenetrateintotheverybowelsoftheearth。Overhead,vastrootsoftreeshungdownfromthesidesoftheravine,drippingwithmoisture,andtremblingwiththeconcussionsproducedbythefall。Itwasnowsunset,andthefeebleuncertainlightthatfounditswayintothesecavernsandwoodydepthsheightenedtheirstrangeappearance,andremindedusthatinashorttimeweshouldfindourselvesinutterdarkness。
