Iforthwithdeterminedtosecure,ifpossible,thegoodwillofthisindividual,asIeasilyperceivedhewasamanofgreatauthorityinhistribe,andonewhomightexertapowerfulinfluenceuponoursubsequentfate。IntheendeavourIwasnotrepulsed;fornothingcouldsurpassthefriendlinesshemanifestedtowardsbothmycompanionandmyself。Heextendedhissturdylimbsbyourside,andendeavouredtomakeuscomprehendthefullextentofthekindlyfeelingsbywhichhewasactuated。Thealmostinsuperabledifficultyincommunicatingtooneanotherourideas,affectedthechiefwithnolittlemortification。Heevincedagreatdesiretobeenlightenedwithregardtothecustomsandpeculiaritiesofthefar-offcountrywehadleftbehindus,andtowhich,underthenameofManeeka,hefrequentlyalluded。
