  Sohewentbackandwatchedthroughthelonghoursatthebottomoftheshaftwheretheevilspiritlayinthestolenbodyithadmaimed,writhingandcursing,andweepingandgroaning,andlearningthelessonofpain。Andtowardsdawnthethinghehadwaitedforhappened,thebrainglowedbrightlyandtheevilspiritcameout,andMr。Besselenteredthebodyhehadfearedheshouldneverenteragain。Ashedidso,thesilence——thebroodingsilence——ended;
  heheardthetumultoftrafficandthevoicesofpeopleoverhead,andthatstrangeworldthatistheshadowofourworld——thedarkandsilentshadowsofineffectualdesireandtheshadowsoflostmen——vanishedcleanaway。
  Helaythereforthespaceofaboutthreehoursbeforehewasfound。
  Andinspiteofthepainandsufferingofhiswounds,andofthedimdampplaceinwhichhelay;inspiteofthetears——wrungfromhimbyhisphysicaldistress——hisheartwasfullofgladnesstoknowthathewasneverthelessbackoncemoreinthekindlyworldofmen。
