  Mrs。Pottingerregardedhimwithcompressedlipsforsometime。
  Thenshesaid,slowlyandhalfmeditatively:“Yes,itmightbedone!Shewillprobablybewillingtosacrificehernearerrelationshiptosaveherselffrompassingasyoursister。Itwouldbelessgallingtoherpride,andshewouldn’thavetotreatyousofamiliarly。“

  InitshighresolvetobearwiththeweaknessesofProsper’smother,thecampreceivedthenewsoftheadventofProsper’scousinsolelywithreferencetoitspossibleeffectupontheaunt’shabits,andverylittleothercuriosity。Prosper’sownreticence,theyfelt,wasprobablyduetothetenderageatwhichhehadseparatedfromhisrelations。ButwhenitwasknownthatProsper’smotherhaddriventothehousewithaveryprettygirlofeighteen,therewasaflutterofexcitementinthatimpressionablecommunity。

  Prosper,stillwithsmilinginanity,stammeredthathewasonly“goin’toshakehands,“andmovedsidewaystowardsthehouse。
