  Now,shoutinginjubilation,someofthemenbegantodragawaythedeadbodies,whileotherscollectedtheriflesandtheremainder,headedbyJeekie,advancedtowardsAlanandAylward,wavingtheirredspears。Alanstoodstaring,forhedidnotintheleastunderstandthemeaningofwhathadhappened,butAylward,whohadturnedverypale,addressedJeekie,saying:
  “Isupposethatyouhavecometomurdermealso,youblackvillain。“

  TherewasthepaleBarbaraseated,weeping。Thereagain,asheenteredshesprangupandsnatchingthepistolthatlaybesideher,turnedittoherbreast。Thensheperceivedhimandthepistolsankdownwardstillfromherrelaxedhanditdroppedtotheground。Shethrewupherarmsandwithoutasoundfellbackwards,orwouldhavefallen,hadhenotcaughther。
  Barbarahadrecovered。ShesatuponherbedinthetentandbyhersatAlan,holdingherhand,whilebeforethemstoodAylwardlikeaprisonerinthedock,andbehindhimthearmedJeekie。
