  Itwasonthefourthnightthatthetroublebegan。Asusualtheyhadlitahugefiremadeofthefallenboughsandrottingtreetrunksthatlayaboutinplenty。Therewasnoreasonwhythefireshouldbesolarge,sincetheyhadlittletocookandtheairwashot,buttheymadeitsoforthesamereasonthatJeekieansweredquestions,forthesakeofcheerfulness。Atleastitgavelightinthedarkness,leapingupinredtonguesofflametwentyorthirtyfeethigh,anditsroarandcracklewerewelcomeintheprimevalsilence。

  “Lookhere,“hewhisperedtoJeekieinEnglish,andJeekielooked,thenwithoutsayingaword,liftedtheshotgunthatlayathissideandfiredstraightatthebush。Instantlytherearoseasqueakingnoise,suchasmightbemadebyawoundedanimal,andthefourporterssprangupinalarm。

  SothechasewentontillAlanbegantowonderwhetheritwouldnotbebettertofacetheendatonce。
