  Tenminuteslaterthesplendid,two-thousandguineamotorbroughamdrewupattheofficesofthe/Judge/andtheobsequiousmotor-footmanbowedMajorVernonthroughitsrathergrimydoorway。Within,asmallboyinakindofboxaskedhisbusiness,andwhenheheardhisname,saidthatthe“Guvnor“hadsentdownwordthathewasgoupatonce——
  thirdfloor,firsttotherightandsecondtotheleft。Souphewent,andwhenhereachedtheindicatedlocalitywastakenpossessionofbyaworried-lookingclerkwhohadevidentlybeenwaitingforhim,andalmostthrustthroughadoortofindhimselfinabig,worn,untidyroom。Atahugedeskinthisroomsatanelderlyman,alsobig,worn,anduntidy-looking,whowavedalongslipofgalley-proofinhishand,andwasengagedinscoldingasub-editor。
  “Whoisthat?“hesaid,wheelinground。“I’mbusy,can’tseeanyone。“

  Mr。Thomassnatchedhisrejectedcopyandvanishedthroughanotherdoor,whereonhischiefremarkedinanaudiblevoice:

  Therewassomethingsoearnestabouttheman’squestionthatitdidnotevenoccurtohisvisitortoresentitsroughness。
