  “NeedanEmpressseekfarforfriends?“
  “Aye,Olaf;fartherthananyonewhobreathes。AnEmpresscanfindflatterersandpartisans,butnotasinglefriend。Suchloveheronlyforwhatshecangivethem。But,iffortunewentagainsther,Isaythattheywouldfallawaylikeleavesfromatreeinawinterfrost,sothatshestoodnakedtoeverybitterblastofheaven。Yes,andthenwouldcomethefoeandrootupthattreeandburnittogivethemwarmthandtocelebratetheirtriumph。SoIthink,Olaf,itwillbewithmebeforeallisdone。Evenmysonhatesme,Olaf,myonlychildforwhosetruewelfareIstrivenightandday。“
  “Ihaveheardasmuch,Augusta,“Isaid。
  “Youhaveheard,likealltheworld。Butwhatelseofillhaveyouheardofme,Olaf?Speakout,man;I’mheretolearnthetruth。“
  “Ihaveheardthatyouareveryambitious,Augusta,andthatyouhateyoursonasmuchashehatesyou,becauseheisarivaltoyourpower。
  Itisrumouredthatyouwouldbegladifheweredeadandyoulefttoreignalone。“
