Therewasnowaconsiderablepause,andoneoftheclergymenwentdownstairstointerrogatethefatherofthegirl,whowaswaitingtheresultoftheexperiment。Hepositivelydeniedthattherewasanydeception,andevenwentsofarastosaythathehimself,upononeoccasion,hadseenandconversedwiththeawfulghost。Thishavingbeencommunicatedtothecompany,itwasunanimouslyresolvedtogivetheghostanothertrial;andtheclergymancalledoutinaloudvoicetothesupposedspiritthatthegentlemantowhomithadpromisedtoappearinthevault,wasabouttorepairtothatplace,whereheclaimedthefulfilmentofitspromise。Atonehouraftermidnighttheyallproceededtothechurch,andthegentlemaninquestion,withanother,enteredthevaultalone,andtookuptheirpositionalongsideofthecoffinofpoorFanny。Theghostwasthensummonedtoappear,butitappearednot;itwassummonedtoknock,butitknockednot;itwassummonedtoscratch,butitscratchednot;andthetworetiredfromthevault,withthefirmbeliefthatthewholebusinesswasadeceptionpractisedbyParsonsandhisdaughter。Therewereothers,however,whodidnotwishtojumpsohastilytoaconclusion,andwhosuggestedthattheywere,perhaps,triflingwiththisawfulandsupernaturalbeing,which,beingoffendedwiththemfortheirpresumption,wouldnotcondescendtoanswerthem。Again,afteraseriousconsultation,itwasagreedonallhandsthat,iftheghostansweredanybodyatall,itwouldanswerMr。Kent,thesupposedmurderer;andhewasaccordinglyrequestedtogodownintothevault。
