  Thisunexpectedintelligenceprovedonlytootrue。Onreturningtomylodgings,IfoundanotefromLadyHolberton,requestingtoseeme,and,ofcourse,immediatelyobeyedthesummons。
  "Lost!——lost!——lost!Mr。Howard!"saidthelady,endeavoringtoconcealheremotion,asshegavemethedetailsofheraffliction。
  "Itmusthavebeenstolen——baselystolen——ontheeveningofmyparty。Oh!whydidIsofoolishlyexhibititamongsomanypeople,andcollectorsamongthem,too!NeveragainwillIadmitmorethanonecollectoratatimeintotheroomwithmyalbum!"sheexclaimedwithenergy。
  Iwasshocked;surelyLadyHolbertondidnotconceiveitpossiblethatanyofherguestscouldbeguiltyofsuchbaseconduct?

  IassuredLadyHolbertonthatinthisrespectsheonlydidmejustice;
  and,infact,atheftofthekindshealludedtoappearedtomeallbutincredible。

  Thedignityofmanner,theconcentratedpassionofexpression,thestrengthofemphasiswithwhichLadyHolbertonspoke,wouldhavedonehonortoaSiddons。Thenaturalstartofhorrorandamazementonmypart,wasalso,nodoubt,veryexpressive——forIwasspeechlesswithsurprise。

  LadyHolberton’ssuspicionswerenowconfirmedbeyondadoubt。
