  15。Personswhobecomeaffectedwithempyemaafterpleurisy,iftheygetclearofitinfortydaysfromthebreakingofit,escapethedisease;butifnot,itpassesintophthisis。
  16。Heatproducesthefollowingbadeffectsonthosewhouseitfrequently:enervationofthefleshyparts,impotenceofthenerves,torporoftheunderstanding,hemorrhages,deliquia,and,alongwiththese,death。
  17。Coldinducesconvulsions,tetanus,mortification,andfebrilerigors。
  18。Coldisinimicaltothebones,theteeth,thenerves,thebrain,andthespinalmarrow,butheatisbeneficial。
  19。Suchpartsashavebeencongealedshouldbeheated,exceptwherethereeitherisahemorrhage,oroneisexpected。
  20。Coldpinchesulcers,hardenstheskin,occasionspainwhichdoesnotendinsuppuration,blackens,producesfebrilerigors,convulsions,andtetanus。
  21。Inthecaseofamuscularyouthhavingtetanuswithoutawound,duringthemidstofsummer,itsometimeshappensthattheallusionofalargequantityofcoldwaterrecallstheheat。Heatrelievesthesediseases。
  22。Heatissuppurative,butnotinallkindsofsores,butwhenitis,itfurnishesthegreatesttestoftheirbeingfreefromdanger。
  Itsoftenstheskin,makesitthin,removespain,soothesrigor,convulsions,andtetanus。Itremovesaffectionsofthehead,andheavinessofit。Itisparticularlyefficaciousinfracturesofthebones,especiallyofthosewhichhavebeenexposed,andmostespeciallyinwoundsofthehead,andinmortificationsandulcersfromcold;inherpesexedens,oftheanus,theprivyparts,thewomb,thebladder,inallthesecasesheatisagreeable,andbringsmatterstoacrisis;butcoldisprejudicial,anddoesmischief。
  23。Coldwateristobeappliedinthefollowingcases;whenthereisahemorrhage,orwhenitisexpected,butnotappliedtothespot,butaroundthespotwhencethebloodflows;andininflammationsandinflammatoryaffections,incliningtoaredandsubsaguineouscolor,andconsistingoffreshblood,inthesecasesitistobeappliedbutitoccasionsmortificationinoldcases;andinerysipelasnotattendedwithulceration,asitprovesinjurioustoerysipelaswhenulcerated。
  24。Coldthings,suchassnowandice,areinimicaltothechest,beingprovocativeofcoughs,ofdischargesofblood,andofcatarrhs。
  25。Swellingsandpainsinthejoints,ulceration,thoseofagoutynature,andsprains,aregenerallyimprovedbyacopiousaffusionofcoldwater,whichreducestheswelling,andremovesthepain;foramoderatedegreeofnumbnessremovespain。
  26。Thelightestwateristhatwhichisquicklyheatedandquicklycooled。
  27。Whenpersonshaveintensethirst,itisagoodthingiftheycansleepoffthedesireofdrinking。
  28。Fumigationwitharomaticspromotesmenstruation,andwouldbeusefulinmanyothercases,ifitdidnotoccasionheavinessofthehead。
  29。Womeninastateofpregnancymaybepurged,iftherebeanyurgentnecessity(or,ifthehumorsbeinastateoforgasm?),fromthefourthtotheseventhmonth,butlesssointhelattercase。Inthefirstandlastperiodsitmustbeavoided。
  30。Itprovesfataltoawomaninastateofpregnancy,ifshebeseizedwithanyoftheacutediseases。
  31。Ifawomanwithchildbebled,shewillhaveanabortion,andthiswillbethemorelikelytohappen,thelargerthefoetus。
  32。Haemoptysisinawomanisremovedbyaneruptionofthemenses。

  37。Inapregnantwoman,ifthebreastssuddenlylosetheirfullness,shehasamiscarriage。
  38。If,inawomanpregnantwithtwins,eitherofherbreastsloseitsfullness,shewillpartwithoneofherchildren;andifitbetherightbreastwhichbecomesslender,itwillbethemalechild,oriftheleft,thefemale。
  39。Ifawomanwhoisnotwithchild,norhasbroughtforth,havemilk,hermensesareobstructed。
  40。Inwomen,bloodcollectedinthebreastsindicatesmadness。
  41。Ifyouwishtoascertainifawomanbewithchild,giveherhydromeltodrinkwhensheisgoingtosleep,andhasnottakensupper,andifshebeseizedwithtorminainthebelly,sheiswithchild,butotherwisesheisnotpregnant。
  42。Awomanwithchild,ifitbeamale,hasagoodcolor,butifafemale,shehasabadcolor。

  47。Iftheportionoftheuterusseatednearthehip—jointsuppurate,itgetsintoastaterequiringtobetreatedwithtents。
  48。Themalefoetusisusuallyseatedintheright,andthefemaleintheleftside。
  49。Toprocuretheexpulsionofthesecundines,applyasternutatory,andshutthenostrilsandmouth。
  50。Ifyouwishtostopthemensesinawoman,applyaslargeacuppinginstrumentaspossibletothebreasts。
  51。Whenwomenarewithchild,themouthoftheirwombisclosed。
  52。Ifinawomanwithchild,muchmilkflowfromthebreasts,itindicatesthatthefoetusisweak;butifthebreastsbefirm,itindicatesthatthefoetusisinamorehealthystate。

  butifagaintheybecomehard,therewillbepain,eitherinthebreasts,orinthehip—joints,orintheeyes,orintheknees,andtheywillnotmiscarry。

  55。Womenwithchildwhoareseizedwithfevers,andwhoaregreatlyemaciated,withoutany(other?)obviouscause,havedifficultanddangerouslabors,andiftheymiscarry,theyareindanger。
  56。Inthefemaleflux(immoderatemenstruation?),ifconvulsionanddeliquiumcomeon,itisbad。
  57。Whenthemensesareexcessive,diseasestakeplace,andwhenthemensesarestopped,diseasesfromtheuterustakeplace。
  58。Strangurysupervenesuponinflammationoftherectum,andofthewomb,andstrangurysupervenesuponsuppurationofthekidney,andhiccupuponinflammationoftheliver。
  59。Ifawomandonotconceive,andwishtoascertainwhethershecanconceive,havingwrappedherupinblankets,fumigatebelow,andifitappearthatthescentpassesthroughthebodytothenostrilsandmouth,knowthatofherselfsheisnotunfruitful。
  60。Ifwomanwithachildhavehercourses,itisimpossiblethatthechildcanbehealthy。
  61。Ifawoman’scoursesbesuppressed,andneitherrigornorfeverhasfollowed,butshehasbeenaffectedwithnausea,youmayreckonhertobewithchild。
  62。Womenwhohavetheuteruscoldanddense(compact?)donotconceive;andthosealsowhohavetheuterushumid,donotconceive,forthesemenisextinguished,andinwomenwhoseuterusisverydry,andveryhot,thesemenislostfromthewantoffood;butwomenwhoseuterusisinanintermediatestatebetweenthesetemperamentsprovefertile。
  63。Andinlikemannerwithrespecttomales;foreither,owingtothelaxityofthebody,thepneumaisdissipatedoutwardly,soasnottopropelthesemen,or,owingtoitsdensity,thefluid(semen?)doesnotpassoutwardly;or,owingtocoldness,itisnotheatedsoastocollectinitsproperplace(seminalvessels?),or,owingtoitsheat,theverysamethinghappens。
  64。Itisabadthingtogivemilktopersonshavingheadache,anditisalsobadtogiveitinfevers,andtopersonswhosehypochondriaareswelledup,andtroubledwithborborygmi,andtothirstypersons;itisbadalso,whengiventothosewhohavebiliousdischargesinacutefevers,andtothosewhohavecopiousdischargesofblood;butitissuitableinphthisicalcases,whennotattendedwithverymuchfever;itisalsotobegiveninfeversofachronicandweaknature,whennoneoftheaforementionedsymptomsarepresent,andthepatientsareexcessivelyemaciated。
  65。Whenswellingsappearonwounds,suchcasesarenotlikelytobeattackedeitherwithconvulsions,ordelirium,butwhenthesedisappearsuddenly,ifsituatedbehind,spasmsandtetanussupervene,andifbefore,mania,acutepainsofthesides,orsuppurations,ordysentery,iftheswellingsberatherred。
  66。Whennoswellingappearsonsevereandbadwounds,itisagreatevil。
  67。Insuchcases,thesoftarefavorable;andcrude,unfavorable。
  68。Whenapersonispainedinthebackpartofthehead,heisbenefitedbyhavingthestraightveinintheforeheadopened。
  69。Rigorscommenceinwomen,especiallyattheloins,andspreadbythebacktothehead;andinmenalso,ratherintheposteriorthantheanteriorsideofthebody,asfromthearmsandthighs;theskinthereisrare,asisobviousfromthegrowthofhaironthem。
  70。Personsattackedwithquartansarenotreadilyattackedwithconvulsions,orifpreviouslyattackedwithconvulsions,theyceaseifaquartansupervene。
  71。Inthosepersonsinwhomtheskinisstretched,andparchedandhard,thediseaseterminateswithoutsweats;butinthoseinwhomtheskinislooseandrare,itterminateswithsweats。
  72。Personsdisposedtojaundicearenotverysubjecttoflatulence。

  10。Inapersonhavingapainfulspotinthehead,withintensecephalalgia,pusorwaterrunningfromthenose,orbythemouth,orattheears,removesthedisease。
  11。Hemorrhoidsappearinginmelancholicandnephriticaffectionsarefavorable。
  12。Whenapersonhasbeencuredofchronichemorrhoids,unlessonebeleft,thereisdangerofdropsyorphthisissupervening。
  13。Sneezingcomingon,inthecaseofapersonafflictedwithhiccup,removesthehiccup。
  14。Inacaseofdropsy,whenthewaterrunsbytheveinsintothebelly,itremovesthedisease。
  15。Inconfirmeddiarrhoea,vomiting,whenitcomesonspontaneously,removesthediarrhoea。
  16。Adiarrhoeasuperveninginaconfirmedcaseofpleurisyorpneumoniaisbad。
  17。Itisagoodthinginophthalmyforthepatienttobeseizedwithdiarrhoea。
  18。Aseverewoundofthebladder,ofthebrain,oftheheart,ofthediaphragm,ofthesmallintestines,ofthestomach,andoftheliver,isdeadly。
  19。Whenabone,cartilage,nerve,theslenderpartofthejaw,orprepuce,arecutout,thepartisneitherrestored,nordoesitunite。
  20。Ifbloodbepouredoutpreternaturallyintoacavity,itmustnecessarilybecomecorrupted。
  21。Inmaniacalaffections,ifvaricesorhemorrhoidscomeon,theyremovethemania。
  22。Thoserupturesinthebackwhichspreaddowntotheelbowsareremovedbyvenesection。

  38。Itisbetternottoapplyanytreatmentincasesofoccultcancer;for,iftreated,thepatientsdiequickly;butifnottreated,theyholdoutforalongtime。
  39。Convulsionstakeplaceeitherfromrepletionordepletion;andsoitiswithhiccup。
  40。Whenpains,withoutinflammation,occuraboutthehypochondria,insuchcases,feversuperveningremovesthepain。
  41。Whenpusformedanywhereinthebodydoesnotpoint,thisisowingtothethicknessofthepart。
  42。Incasesofjaundice,itisabadsymptomwhentheliverbecomesindurated。
  43。Whenpersonshavinglargespleensareseizedwithdysentery,andifthedysenterypassintoachronicstate,eitherdropsyorlienterysupervenes,andtheydie。
  44。Whenileuscomesoninacaseofstrangury,theyprovefatalinsevendays,unless,feversupervening,therebeacopiousdischargeofurine。
  45。Whenulcerscontinueopenforayearorupward,theremustnecessarilybeexfoliationofbone,andthecicatricesarehollow。
  46。Suchpersonsasbecomehump—backedfromasthmaorcoughbeforepuberty,die。

  33。Inthosecasesinwhichtheurinebecomesdividedthereisgreatdisorderinthebody。
  34。Whenbubblessettleonthesurfaceoftheurine,theyindicatediseaseofthekidneys,andthatthecomplaintwillbeprotracted。
  35。Whenthescumonthesurfaceisfattyandcopious,itindicatesacutediseasesofthekidneys。
  36。Whenevertheaforementionedsymptomsoccurinnephriticdiseases,andalongwiththemacutepainsaboutthemusclesoftheback,providedthesebeseatedabouttheexternalparts,youmayexpectthattherewillbeanabscess;butifthepainsberatherabouttheinternalparts,youmayalsoratherexpectthattheabscesswillbeseatedinternally。
  37。Haematemesis,withoutfever,doesnotprovefatal,butwithfeveritisbad;itistobetreatedwithrefrigerantandstypticthings。
  38。Defluxionsintothecavityofthechestsuppurateintwentydays。
  39。Whenapatientpassesbloodandclots,andisseizedwithstranguryandpainintheperineumandpubes,diseaseaboutthebladderisindicated。
  40。Ifthetonguesuddenlyloseitspowers,orapartofthebodybecomeapoplectic,theaffectionisofamelancholicnature。
  41。Inhypercatharsis,ofoldpersons,hiccupsuperveningisnotagoodsymptom。
  42。Inafever,isnotofabiliousnature,acopiousallusionofhotwaterupontheheadremovesthefever。
  43。Awomandoesnotbecomeambidexterous。
  44。Whenempyemaistreatedeitherbythecauteryorincision,ifpureandwhitepusflowfromthewound,thepatientsrecover;butifmixedwithblood,slimyandfetid,theydie。
  45。Whenabscessoftheliveristreatedbythecauteryorincision,ifthepuswhichisdischargedbepureandwhite,thepatientsrecover,(forinthiscaseitissituatedinthecoatsoftheliver;)butifitresembletheleesofoilasitflows,theydie。
  46。Painsoftheeyesareremovedbydrinkingundilutedwine,plenteousbathingwithhotwater,andvenesection。
  47。Ifadropsicalpatientbeseizedwithhiccupthecaseishopeless。
  48。Stranguryanddysuriaarecuredbydrinkingpurewine,andvenesection;opentheveinontheinside。
  49。Itisagoodsignwhenswellingandrednessonthebreastseizeapersonveryillofquinsy,forinthiscasethediseaseisdivertedoutwardly。
  50。Whenthebrainisattackedwithsphacelus,thepatientsdieinthreedays;oriftheyescapethese,theyrecover。
  51。Sneezingarisesfromthehead,owingtothebrainbeingheated,orthecavity(ventricle)intheheadbeingfilledwithhumors;theairconfinedinitthenisdischarged,andmakesanoise,becauseitcomesthroughanarrowpassage。
  52。Feversuperveningonpainfulaffectionsoftheliverremovesthepain。
  53。Thosepersonstowhomitisbeneficialtohavebloodtakenfromtheirveins,shouldhaveitdoneinspring。
  54。Inthosecaseswherephlegmiscollectedbetweenthediaphragmandthestomach,andoccasionspain,asnotfindingapassageintoeitherofthecavities,thediseasewillbecarriedoffifthephlegmbedivertedtothebladderbytheveins。
  55。Whentheliverisfilledwithwaterandburstsintotheepiploon,inthiscasethebellyisfilledwithwaterandthepatientdies。
  56。Anxiety,yawning,rigor,—winedrunkwithanequalproportionofwater,removesthesecomplaints。
  57。Whentubercles(phymata)formintheurethra,iftheysuppurateandburst,thepainiscarriedoff。
  58。Incasesofconcussionofthebrainproducedbyanycause,thepatientsnecessarilylosetheirspeech。
  59。Inapersonaffectedwithfever,whenthereisnoswellinginthefauces,shouldsuffocationsuddenlycomeon,andthepatientnotbeabletoswallow,exceptwithdifficulty,itisamortalsymptom。
  59a。Inthecaseofapersonoppressedbyfever,iftheneckbeturnedaside,andthepatientcannotswallow,whilethereisnoswellingintheneck,itisamortalsign。
  60。Fastingshouldbeprescribedthethosepersonswhohavehumidflesh;forfastingdriesbodies。
  61。Whentherearechangesinthewholebody,andthebodybecomessometimescoldandsometimeshot,andthecolorchanges,aprotracteddiseaseisindicated。
  62。Acopioussweat,hotorcold,constantlyflowing,indicatesasuperabundanceofhumidity;wemustevacuatethen,inastrongpersonupward,andinaweak,downward。
