  Itmaysurprisesomepeopletolearnthatin1915thislittleplaywasarecruitingposterindisguise。TheBritishofficerseldomlikesIrishsoldiers;buthealwaystriestohaveacertainproportionoftheminhisbattalion,because,partlyfromawantofcommonsensewhichleadsthemtovaluetheirliveslessthanEnglishmendo(livesarereallylessworthlivinginapoorcountry),andpartlybecauseeventhemostcowardlyIrishmanfeelsobligedtooutdoanEnglishmaninbraveryifpossible,andatleasttosetaperilouspaceforhim,Irishsoldiersgiveimpetustothosemilitaryoperationswhichrequirefortheirspiritedexecutionmoredevilmentthanprudence。
  Unfortunately,Irishrecruitingwasbadlybungledin1915。TheIrishwereforthemostpartRomanCatholicsandloyalIrishmen,whichmeansthatfromtheEnglishpointofviewtheywerehereticsandrebels。ButtheywerewillingenoughtogosoldieringonthesideofFranceandseetheworldoutsideIreland,whichisadullplacetolivein。Itwasquiteeasytoenlistthembyapproachingthemfromtheirownpointofview。ButtheWarOfficeinsistedonapproachingthemfromthepointofviewofDublinCastle。TheywerediscouragedandrepulsedbyrefusalstogivecommissionstoRomanCatholicofficers,ortoallowdistinctIrishunitstobeformed。Toattractthem,thewallswerecoveredwithplacardsheadedREMEMBERBELGIUM。ThefollyofaskinganIrishmantorememberanythingwhenyouwanthimtofightforEnglandwasapparenttoeveryoneoutsidetheCastle:FORGETANDFORGIVEwouldhavebeenmoretothepoint。

  Appealtohisdiscontent,hisdeadlyboredom,histhwartedcuriosityanddesireforchangeandadventure,and,toescapefromIreland,hewillgoabroadtoriskhislifeforFrance,forthePapalStates,forsecessioninAmerica,andeven,ifnobettermaybe,forEngland。KnowingthattheignoranceandinsularityoftheIrishmanisadangertohimselfandtohisneighbors,IhadnoscrupleinmakingthatappealwhentherewassomethingforhimtofightwhichthewholeworldhadtofightunlessitmeanttocomeunderthejackbootoftheGermanversionofDublinCastle。
  Therewasanotherconsideration,unmentionablebytherecruitingsergeantsandwarorators,whichmustneverthelesshavehelpedthempowerfullyinprocuringsoldiersbyvoluntaryenlistment。
