  AfurtherexperimentmadebyMrArnoldDalywiththisplayisworthrecording。In1905MrDalyproducedMrsWarren’sProfessioninNewYork。ThepressofthatcityinstantlyraisedacrythatsuchpersonsasMrsWarrenare"ordure,"andshouldnotbementionedinthepresenceofdecentpeople。ThishideousrepudiationofhumanityandsocialconsciencesotookpossessionoftheNewYorkjournaliststhatthefewamongthemwhokepttheirfeetmorallyandintellectuallycoulddonothingtochecktheepidemicoffoullanguage,grosssuggestion,andravingobscenityofwordandthoughtthatbrokeout。Thewritersabandonedallself—restraintundertheimpressionthattheywereupholdingvirtueinsteadofoutragingit。Theyinfectedeachotherwiththeirhysteriauntiltheywereforallpracticalpurposesindecentlymad。TheyfinallyforcedthepolicetoarrestMrDalyandhiscompany,andledthemagistratetoexpresshisloathingofthedutythusforceduponhimofreadinganunmentionableandabominableplay。Ofcoursetheconvulsionsoonexhausteditself。Themagistrate,naturallysomewhatimpatientwhenhefoundthatwhathehadtoreadwasastrenuouslyethicalplayformingpartofabookwhichhadbeenincirculationunchallengedforeightyears,andhadbeenreceivedwithoutprotestbythewholeLondonandNewYorkpress,gavethejournalistsapieceofhismindastotheirmoraltasteinplays。
  Byconsent,hepassedthecaseontoahighercourt,whichdeclaredthattheplaywasnotimmoral;acquittedMrDaly;andmadeanendoftheattempttousethelawtodeclarelivingwomentobe"ordure,"andthusenforcesilenceastothefar—reachingfactthatyoucannotcheapenwomeninthemarketforindustrialpurposeswithoutcheapeningthemforotherpurposesaswell。I
