　　Now，togofromoneimportantsubjecttoanother，Imustaccountformyownlaziness，whichIdobyreferringyoutoasmallanonymoussortofanovel，inthreevolumes，Waverley，whichyouwillreceivebythemailofthisday。ItwasaveryoldattemptofminetoembodysometraitsofthosecharactersandmannerspeculiartoScotland，thelastremnantsofwhichvanishedduringmyownyouth，sothatfewornotracesnowremain。
　　Ihadwrittengreatpartofthefirstvolume，andsketchedotherpassages，whenImislaidtheMS。，andonlyfounditbythemerestaccidentasIwasrummagingthedrawersofanoldcabinet；andItookthefancyoffinishingit，whichIdidsofast，thatthelasttwovolumeswerewritteninthreeweeks。’’

　　HappeningtopassthroughEdinburghinJune1814，IdinedonedaywithWilliamMenziesafterwardsJudgeattheCapeofGoodHope，whoseresidencewastheninGeorgeStreet，situatedveryneartoandwithinsightofthebackwindowsofScott’shouseinNorthCastleStreet。Itwasapartyofveryyoungpersons，mostofthem，likeMenziesandmyself，destinedfortheBarofScotland，allgayandthoughtless，enjoyingthefirstflushofmanhood，withlittleremembranceoftheyesterday，orcareofthemorrow。
