  ItmusthaveoftencrossedMissCrawley’smindthatnobodydoesanythingfornothing。Ifshemeasuredherownfeelingtowardstheworld,shemusthavebeenprettywellabletogaugethoseoftheworldtowardsherself;
  andperhapsshereflectedthatitistheordinarylotofpeopletohavenofriendsiftheythemselvescarefornobody。
  Well,meanwhileBeckywasthegreatestcomfortandconveniencetoher,andshegaveheracoupleofnewgowns,andanoldnecklaceandshawl,andshowedherfriendshipbyabusingallherintimateacquaintancestohernewconfidantethanwhichtherecan’tbeamoretouchingproofofregard,andmeditatedvaguelysomegreatfuturebenefit——tomarryherperhapstoClump,theapothecary,ortosettleherinsomeadvantageouswayoflife;oratanyrate,tosendherbacktoQueen’sCrawleywhenshehaddonewithher,andthefullLondonseasonhadbegun。
