Hewasveryintelligent,andhadbeenofthegreatestservicetome;indeed,butforhisgoodsense,tact,andcommandofthelanguageofthetribesthroughwhichwepassed,IbelieveweshouldscarcelyhavesucceededinreachingthecoastInaturallyfeltgratefultohim;
andashischiefwishedALLmycompanionstogotoEnglandwithme,andwouldprobablybedisappointedifnonewent,Ithoughtitwouldbebeneficialforhimtoseetheeffectsofcivilization,andreportthemtohiscountrymen;IwishedalsotomakesomereturnforhisveryimportantservicesOthershadpetitionedtocome,butIexplainedthedangerofachangeofclimateandfood,andwithdifficultyrestrainedthemTheonlyonewhonowremainedbeggedsohardtocomeonboardshipthatIgreatlyregrettedthattheexpensepreventedmyaccedingtohiswishtovisitEngland。

WhenwepartedfromourfriendsatKilimane,theseaonthebarwasfrightfuleventotheseamenThiswasthefirsttimeSekwebuhadseenthesea。

andtriedtoencouragehimHewaswellacquaintedwithcanoes,butneverhadseenaughtlikethisWhenwereachedtheshipafine,largebrigofsixteengunsandacrewofonehundredandthirty

Iseemedtoknowthelanguageperfectly,butthewordsIwantedwouldnotcomeatmycallWhenIleftEnglandIhadnointentionofreturning,anddirectedmyattentionearnestlytothelanguagesofAfrica,payingnonetoEnglishcompositionWiththeexceptionofashortintervalinAngola,IhadbeenthreeandahalfyearswithoutspeakingEnglish,andthis,withthirteenyearsofpreviouspartialdisuseofmynativetongue,mademefeelsadlyatalossonboardthe“Frolic“。
WeleftKilimaneonthe12thofJuly,andreachedtheMauritiusonthe12thofAugust,1856SekwebuwaspickingupEnglish,andbecomingafavoritewithbothmenandofficersHeseemedalittlebewildered,everythingonboardaman-of-warbeingsonewandstrange;
butheremarkedtomeseveraltimes,“Yourcountrymenareveryagreeable。”
and,“Whatastrangecountrythisisallwatertogether!”
HealsosaidthathenowunderstoodwhyIusedthesextant。
WhenwereachedtheMauritiusasteamercameouttotowusintotheharbor。
Theconstantstrainonhisuntutoredmindseemednowtoreachaclimax,forduringthenighthebecameinsaneIthoughtatfirstthathewasintoxicatedHehaddescendedintoaboat,and,whenIattemptedtogodownandbringhimintotheship,herantothesternandsaid,“No!no!itisenoughthatIdiealone。
Youmustnotperish;ifyoucome,Ishallthrowmyselfintothewater。”
Perceivingthathismindwasaffected,Isaid,“Now,Sekwebu,wearegoingtoMaRobert。”Thisstruckachordinhisbosom,andhesaid,“Ohyes;whereisshe,andwhereisRobert?”andheseemedtorecover。
Theofficersproposedtosecurehimbyputtinghiminirons;
but,beingagentlemaninhisowncountry,Iobjected,knowingthattheinsaneoftenretainanimpressionofilltreatment,andIcouldnotbeartohaveitsaidinSekeletu’scountrythatIhadchainedoneofhisprincipalmenastheyhadseenslavestreated。
Itriedtogethimonshorebyday,butherefusedIntheeveningafreshaccessionofinsanityoccurred;hetriedtospearoneofthecrew,thenleapedoverboard,and,thoughhecouldswimwell,pulledhimselfdownhandunderhandbythechaincableWeneverfoundthebodyofpoorSekwebu。
AttheMauritiusIwasmosthospitablyreceivedbyMajorGeneralCMHay,andhegenerouslyconstrainedmetoremainwithhimtill,bytheinfluenceofthegoodclimateandquietEnglishcomfort,IgotridofanenlargedspleenfromAfricanfeverInNovemberIcameuptheRedSea;escapedthedangerofshipwreckthroughtheadmirablemanagementofCaptainPowell,ofthePeninsularandOrientalSteamCompany’sship“Candia“,andonthe12thofDecemberwasoncemoreindearoldEngland。
TheCompanymostliberallyrefundedmypassage-moneyIhavenotmentionedhalfthefavorsbestowed,butImayjustaddthatnoonehascauseformoreabundantgratitudetohisfellow-menandtohisMakerthanIhave;
