  Inthemeanwhile,thecaptainhadtowalkthestreets,appearintheconsulate,becross-examinedbyLloyd’sagent,bebadgeredabouthislostaccounts,signpaperswithhislefthand,andrepeathisliestoeveryskipperinSanFrancisco:notknowingatwhatmomenthemightrunintothearmsofsomeoldfriendwhoshouldhailhimbythenameofWicks,orsomenewenemywhoshouldbeinapositiontodenyhimthatofTrent。
  Andthelatterincidentdidactuallybefallhim,butwastransformedbyhisstoutcountenanceintoanelementofstrength。ItwasintheconsulateofalluntowardplacesthathesuddenlyheardabigvoiceinquiringforCaptainTrent。Heturnedwiththecustomarysinkingathisheart。
