  Ihavealreadymorethanoncespokenofthedisgustingairofpatronagewhichheassumedtowardme,andofhisfrequentofficiousinterferencewithymywill。Thisinterferenceoftentooktheungraciouscharacterofadvice;advicenotopenlygiven,buthintedorinsinuated。IreceiveditwitharepugnancewhichgainedstrengthasIgrewinyears。Yet,atthisdistantday,letmedohimthesimplejusticetoacknowledgethatIcanrecallnooccasionwhenthesuggestionsofmyrivalwereonthesideofthoseerrorsorfolliessousualtohisimmatureageandseeminginexperience;thathismoralsense,atleast,ifnothisgeneraltalentsandworldlywisdom,wasfarkeenerthanmyown;andthatImight,to-day,havebeenabetter,andthusahappierman,hadIlessfrequentlyrejectedthecounselsembodiedinthosemeaningwhisperswhichIthenbuttoocordiallyhatedandtoobitterlydespised。
  Asitwas,Iatlengthgrewrestiveintheextremeunderhisdistastefulsupervision,anddailyresentedmoreandmoreopenlywhatIconsideredhisintolerablearrogance。Ihavesaidthat,inthefirstyearsofourconnexionasschoolmates,myfeelingsinregardtohimmighthavebeeneasilyripenedintofriendship:but,inthelattermonthsofmyresidenceattheacademy,althoughtheintrusionofhisordinarymannerhad,beyonddoubt,insomemeasure,abated,mysentiments,innearlysimilarproportion,partookverymuchofpositivehatred。Upononeoccasionhesawthis,Ithink,andafterwardsavoided,ormadeashowofavoidingme。
