Havingfulfilledthisvowformanyyearstotheletter,andwithareligiouspunctualityandmethodthatconferredgreatcredituponhimasamanofdevoutfeelingandexcellentsense,hewasinterruptedoneafternoonnodoubtathisprayersbyavisitfromhisgrandvizier,towhosedaughter,itappears,therehadoccurredanidea。
HernamewasScheherazade,andherideawas,thatshewouldeitherredeemthelandfromthedepopulatingtaxuponitsbeauty,orperish,aftertheapprovedfashionofallheroines,intheattempt。
Accordingly,andalthoughwedonotfindittobeleap-yearwhichmakesthesacrificemoremeritorious,shedeputesherfather,thegrandvizier,tomakeanoffertothekingofherhand。Thishandthekingeagerlyacceptshehadintendedtotakeitatallevents,andhadputoffthematterfromdaytoday,onlythroughfearofthevizier,but,inacceptingitnow,hegivesallpartiesverydistinctlytounderstand,that,grandvizierornograndvizier,hehasnottheslightestdesignofgivinguponeiotaofhisvoworofhisprivileges。When,therefore,thefairScheherazadeinsisteduponmarryingtheking,anddidactuallymarryhimdespiteherfather’sexcellentadvicenottodoanythingofthekindwhenshewouldanddidmarryhim,Isay,willI,nillI,itwaswithherbeautifulblackeyesasthoroughlyopenasthenatureofthecasewouldallow。
