  Thus,althoughinaverycursoryandimperfectmanner,IhaveendeavoredtoconveytoyoumyconceptionofthePoeticPrinciple。Ithasbeenmypurposetosuggestthat,whilethisprincipleitselfisstrictlyandsimplytheHumanAspirationforSupernalBeauty,themanifestationofthePrincipleisalwaysfoundin_anelevatingexcitementofthesoul,_quiteindependentofthatpassionwhichistheintoxicationoftheHeart,orofthattruthwhichisthesatisfactionoftheReason。Forinregardtopassion,alas!itstendencyistodegraderatherthantoelevatetheSoul。
  Love,onthecontraryLovethetrue,thedivineErostheUranianasdistinguishedfromtheDiona~anVenusisunquestionablythepurestandtruestofallpoeticalthemes。AndinregardtoTruth,if,tobesure,throughtheattainmentofatruthweareledtoperceiveaharmonywherenonewasapparentbefore,weexperienceatoncethetruepoeticaleffect;
  butthiseffectisreferabletotheharmonyalone,andnotintheleastdegreetothetruthwhichmerelyservedtorendertheharmonymanifest。
  Weshallreach,however,moreimmediatelyadistinctconceptionofwhatthetruePoetryis,bymerereferencetoafewofthesimpleelementswhichinduceinthePoethimselfthepoeticaleffectHerecognizestheambrosiawhichnourisheshissoulinthebrightorbsthatshineinHeaveninthevolutesoftheflowerintheclusteringoflowshrubberiesinthewavingofthegrain-fieldsintheslantingoftalleasterntreesinthebluedistanceofmountainsinthegroupingofcloudsinthetwinklingofhalf-hiddenbrooksinthegleamingofsilverriversinthereposeofsequesteredlakesinthestar-mirroringdepthsoflonelywells。HeperceivesitinthesongsofbirdsintheharpofBolosinthesighingofthenight-windintherepiningvoiceoftheforestinthesurfthatcomplainstotheshoreinthefreshbreathofthewoodsinthescentofthevioletinthevoluptuousperfumeofthehyacinthinthesuggestiveodourthatcomestohimateventidefromfardistantundiscoveredislands,overdimoceans,illimitableandunexplored。
