  Ralphbidshimsodo,buttoheedwellthathehurtnoman,orletfiregetintoanyhouseorroof;sohetakeshisknotofmenandridesoffonthespur,andRalphandthemainofthemcomeonquietly;
  andwhentheycameintothestreetofthethorp,lotherebythecrossabigfirelighted,andtheeldersstandingtherebycapinhand,andascoreofstoutcarleswithweaponsintheirhands。
  ThenthechiefmancameuptoRalphandgreetedhimandsaid:
  “Lord,whenweheardthatanarmedcompanywasathandwedeemednolessthanthattheridersoftheBurgwereuponus,anddeemedthattherewasnoughtforitbuttofleeeachasfarandasfastashemight。Butnowwehaveheardthatthouartagoodlordseekinghisownwiththehelpofworthychampions,andafoemantothosedevilsoftheBurg,webidtheelookuponusandallwehaveasthine,lord,andtakekindlysuchguestingaswemaygivethee。”
  Theoldman’svoicequaveredalittleashelookedonthestarkshapesoftheDryTree;butRalphlookedkindlyonhim,andsaid:
  “Yea,mymaster,wewillbutaskforacoveringforourheads,andwhatvictualthoumaysteasilyspareusinreturnforgoodsilver,andthoushalthaveourthankswithal。
  Butwhobethesestoutladswithstavesandbucklers,orwhitherwilltheyto-night?”
  Thereatatallyoungmanwithaspearinhishandandgirtwithashortswordcameforthandsaidboldly:“Lord,webeafewwhothoughtwhenweheardthattheBurg-devilswereathandthatwemightaswelldieinthefieldgivingstrokeforstroke,asbehauledoffanddroptopiecesunderthehandsoftheirtormentors;
