Thereisnothingparticularlyimposingabouttheplace;notoweringcliffsorpillarsofpiledgranite,asattheBlackKloof。Itisjustavalecutoutbywater,borderedbysteepslopesoneitherside,andastillsteeperslopestrownwithlargerocksatitsend。Dottedhereandthereontheseslopesgrewtallaloesthatfromalittledistancelookedlikescatteredmen,whereofthelowerleaveswereshrivelledandblackenedbyveldfires。Alsotherewereafeweuphorbias,grey,naked-lookingthingsthatendinpointslikefingersonahand,andamongthemsomesparsethorntrees,strugglingtoliveinaninhospitablesoil。
Theplacehasonepeculiarity。Juttingintoitfromthehillsideisaridgeorspur,sixtyorseventyyardsinlengthbyperhapstwentybroad,thatendsinaflatpointofrockwhichstandsaboutfortyfeetabovetheleveloftherestofthelittlevalley。Onthisridgealsogrewtallaloesuntilnearitsextremitythesoilceased,orhadbeenwashedawayfromthewater-worncoreofrock。
Itwas,andnodoubtstillis,adesolate-lookingspot,atanyrateformostofthedaywhenowingtotheshadowofthesurroundinghills,itreceivesbutlittlesun。Everythingaboutit,especiallywhenIwasthereinatimeofrain,seemeddankandmiserable,althoughtheflatfloorofthekloofwasclothedwithagrowthoftall,coarsegrass,andweedsthatboreanevil-smellingflower。PerhapssomesenseofappropriatenesshadcausedtheZulukingstochoosethislonesome,deathly-lookinggorgeasoneoftheirexecutiongrounds。Atanyratemanyhadbeenslainhere,forskullsandthelargerhumanbones,someofthemblackwithage,layallaboutamongthegrass,astheyhadbeenscatteredbyhyenasandjackals。Theywereparticularlythickbeneathandaroundthetable-likerockthatIhavementioned。
GozatoldmethatthiswasbecausetheKing’sSlayersmadeacustomofdraggingthevictimalongtheprojectingtonguetotheedgeofthisrockandhurlinghim,eitherdeadorliving,tothegroundbeneath;or,inthecaseofwitches;drivingthemoveraftertheyhadbeenblinded。

Therehesatlikeahugeapestaringatthesky,forthefirelightshoneonhisdeepandburningeyes。Themoonlightincreased,butnowandagainitwasbrokenbylittlecloudswhichcausedstrangeshadowstoappearabouttherock。Someoftheseshadowslookedasthoughveiledfigureswereapproachingthewizard,bendingoverhimanddepartingagain,aftergivinghimtheirmessageorcounsel。
“HisSpiritsvisithim。”whisperedGoza,butImadenoanswer。
