EricwentwarilyuptheBaresarkpath,forhewouldkeephisbreathinhim,andthelightshoneredlyonhisgoldenhelm。Highhewent,tillatlengthhecametoapassnarrowanddarkandhedgedoneithersidewithsheercliffs,suchastwoarmedmenmightholdagainstascore。
Hepeereddownthispath,buthesawnoBaresark,thoughitwaswornbyBaresarkfeet。Hecreptalongitslength,movinglikeasunbeamthroughthedarknessofthepass,forthelightgatheredonhishelmandsword,tillsuddenlythepathturnedandhewasonthebrinkofagulfthatseemedtohavenobottom,and,lookingacrossanddown,hecouldseeJonandthehorsesmorethanahundredfathomsbeneath。NowEricmuststop,forthispathleadsbutintotheblackgulf。AlsohewasperplexedtoknowwhereSkallagrimhadhislair。Hecrepttothebrinkandgazed。Thenhesawthatapointofrockjuttedfromthesheerfaceofthecliffandthatthepointwaswornwiththemarkoffeet。
