  Soothfasttidingshadassuredhimthatthisnoblemanwasatlength,andwithoutfail,tohonourhiscastleatoneintheafternoon,beingalatedinner-hour;andmuchwasthebustleinconsequenceoftheannunciation。TheLordKeepertraversedthechambers,heldconsultationwiththebutlerinthecellars,andevenventured,attheriskofademelewithacookofaspiritloftyenoughtoscorntheadmonitionsofLadyAshtonherself,topeepintothekitchen。Satisfied,atlength,thateverythingwasinasactiveatrainofpreparationaswaspossible,hesummonedRavenswoodandhisdaughtertowalkupontheterrace,forthepurposeofwatching,fromthatcommandingposition,theearliestsymptomsofhislordship’sapproach。Forthispurpose,withslowandidlestep,heparadedtheterrace,which,flankedwithaheavystonebattlement,stretchedinfrontofthecastleuponalevelwiththefirststory;whilevisitorsfoundaccesstothecourtbyaprojectinggateway,thebartizanorflat-leadedroofofwhichwasaccessiblefromtheterracebyaneasyflightoflowandbroadsteps。Thewholeborearesemblancepartlytoacastle,partlytoanobleman’sseat;andthoughcalculated,insomerespects,fordefence,evincedthatithadbeenconstructedunderasenseofthepowerandsecurityoftheancientLordsofRavenswood。
