ItispleasanttonotethatthecityofBlathersvilleisendeavoringtocontractwithsomeNewYorkgentlementopaveitswell-nighimpassablestreetswiththeNicholsonpavement。TheDailyHurrahurgesthemeasurewithability,andseemsconfidentofultimatesuccess。
Ipassedmymanuscriptovertothechiefeditorforacceptance,alteration,ordestruction。Heglancedatitandhisfaceclouded。Heranhiseyedownthepages,andhiscountenancegrewportentous。Itwaseasytoseethatsomethingwaswrong。Presentlyhesprangupandsaid:
“Thunderandlightning!DoyousupposeIamgoingtospeakofthosecattlethatway?,Doyousupposemysubscribersaregoingtostandsuchgruelasthat?,Givemethepen!”

“Nowthatisthewaytowrite——pepperyandtothepoint。Mush-and-milkjournalismgivesmethefan-tods。”
Aboutthistimeabrickcamethroughthewindowwithasplinteringcrash,andgavemeaconsiderableofajoltintheback。Imovedoutofrange——Ibegantofeelintheway。
Thechiefsaid,“ThatwastheColonel,likely。I’vebeenexpectinghimfortwodays。Hewillbeupnowrightaway。”
Hewascorrect。TheColonelappearedinthedooramomentafterwardwithadragoonrevolverinhishand。
