  Theschoolboys,withbookandsatchel,insmartuniforms,marchuptothegymnasium,andreturnthenceattheirstatedtime。Thereisonecoffee-houseinthetown,andIseeoneoldgentlemangoestoit。Thereareshopswithnocustomersseemingly,andthelazytradesmenlookoutoftheirlittlewindowsatthesinglestrangersaunteringby。Thereisastallwithbasketsofqueerlittleblackgrapesandapples,andaprettybrisktradewithhalfadozenurchinsstandinground。But,beyondthis,thereisscarceanytalkormovementinthestreet。There'snobodyatthebook-shop。“Ifyouwillhavethegoodnesstocomeagaininanhour,“saysthebanker,withhismouthfulofdinneratoneo'clock,“youcanhavethemoney。”Thereisnobodyatthehotel,savethegoodlandlady,thekindwaiters,thebriskyoungcookwhoministerstoyou。NobodyisintheProtestantchurch——oh!strangesight,thetwoconfessionsarehereatpeace!——nobodyintheCatholicchurch:untilthesacristan,fromhissnugabodeinthecathedralclose,espiesthetravellereyingthemonstersandpillarsbeforetheoldshark-
