  ishundertheinfluenceofadistrustsokeen,andseeminglysoplausible。InthisembarrassmenttheSergeantconsultedtheQuartermaster,whoseopinion,ashissuperior,hefeltboundtorespect,thoughatthemomentindependentofhiscontrol。Itisanunfortunateoccurrenceforonewhoisinadilemmatoaskadviceofanotherwhoisdesirousofstandingwellinhisfavor,thepartyconsultedbeingalmostcertaintotrytothinkinthemannerwhichwillbethemostagreeabletothepartyconsulting。Inthepresentinstanceitwasequallyunfortunate,asrespectsacandidconsiderationofthesubject,thatCap,insteadoftheSer-
  geanthimself,madethestatementofthecase。fortheearnestoldsailorwasnotbackwardinlettinghislistenerperceivetowhichsidehewasdesirousthattheQuarter-
  mastershouldlean。LieutenantMuirwasmuchtoopol-
  itictooffendtheuncleandfatherofthewomanhehopedandexpectedtowin,hadhereallythoughtthecasead-
  mittedofdoubt。but,inthemannerinwhichthefactsweresubmittedtohim,hewasseriouslyinclinedtothinkthatitwouldbewelltoputthecontrolofthe_Scud_tem-
  porarilyintothemanagomentofCap,asaprecautionagainsttreachery。ThisopinionthendecidedtheSer-
  geant,whoforthwithsetabouttheexecutionoftheneces-

  hamsimplyinformedJasperthathefeltittobehisdutytodeprivehimtemporarilyofthecommandofthecutter,andtoconferitonhisownbrother-in-law。Anaturalandinvoluntaryburstofsurprise,whichescapedtheyoungman,wasmetbyaquietremark,remindinghimthatmili-
  taryservicewasoftenofanaturethatrequiredconceal-

  Capworeseveraltimes。anditwasnowevideutthatthe_Scud_wasdriftingintothebroaderanddeeperpartsofthelake,theseasragingdownuponherinawaythatnonebutavesselofsuperiormouldandbuildcouldhavelongriddenandwithstood。Allthis,however,gaveCapnouneasiness。but,likethehunterthatprickshisearsatthesoundofthehorn,orthewar-horsethatpawsandsnortswithpleasureattherollofthedrum,thewholesceneawakenedallthatwasmanwithinhim。andinsteadofthecaptious,supercilious,anddogmaticcritic,quarrellingwithtriflesandexaggeratingimmaterialthings,hebegantoexhibitthequalitiesofthehardyandexperiencedseamanwhichhetrulywas。Thehandssoonimbibedarespectforhisskill。and,thoughtheywonderedatthedisappear-
